March 31st was pretty interesting
I work for Frontier Airlines in the EarlyReturns Department. My general descriptions would be a customer service agent in the call center but our job requires more than just that. So yesterday, instead of taking calls I worked the queue the majority of the day. Since neither one of supervisors were there, I took it upon myself to be the "Loyalty" agent that we are supposed to be and took calls periodically when someone went to lucn or break so that our call volume would stay low.
My first call of the day was a brother. That's a rarity in EarlyReturns for me. I talk to maybe one black person about once a month. From the minute I opened up my mouth I had the feeling of deja vu, but it was a good feeling so I knew that something good would happen. I've learned to trust my gut and we have a pretty good relationship. When I began talking to him I was pleased that he didn't try to hit on me, because even though I rarely talk to black men at work, they ALL flirt unless their booking a flight for their family.
What was so refreshing about this call was not only did he not flirt but he is far more intelligent then the ones that do. We began discussing books. He offered some to me and vice versa. I even mentioned a rare book and he knew more than I did about the author and it's series of books. Now this shocked the heck out of me because since I've arrived in Denver, a year ago, I have never met a like minded black.
Its good to be able to talk to someone and they know what I'm talking about.
So anyway, the rest of my time at work wasn't interesting at all. I found myself, always annoyed at the fact that there wasn't enough work for me to do. I can't do much personal work because we have restrictions on what website we can go to. So I was pretty much bored out of my mind. It was slow enough to talk to coworkers but not slow enough to take a nap. I hate that. :)
After work I went to my regular spot, Cooper's Bar and Grill. I told myself that I wasn't gonna go and that I would go home and complete some work. Since I've gotten back from New Orleans I've been runnnin' around Denver like chicken with my head cut off, trying to catch up on everything that I missed since I was gone a week. But I needed some R&R which means I had to go to Cooper's.
So I start out wanting to be very anti-social. The plan was to drink my Rum and Coke in peace. I had about 15 minutes of that and people started seeing me. As a regular at a local bar you can't help but to get noticed. I need a back up bar. :) Anyway, I see the woman who calls me Baltimore. She doesn't know my name and I don't know hers but it's all good. She wanted to introduce me to her daughter who had loved a mix tape that I had given her. They leave and I'm alone again. :)
So I'm sitting alone, enjoying my solitude and another friend comes up and says he something and pointing at me and another woman. So I'm thinking "what the hell is going on here?" She comes over and she tells me that she a poet and she's selling a book of poems. Me, being from Baltimore I used to go to poetry every single night of the week and since I've gotten to Denver my social life in that regard is dead. Having said that you would think that I would be looking forward to hearing her, but remember we're at a bar. I thinking she better not be drunk and suck. :)
Since I am supporter of independent artist I reached for my wallet. My thought was let me support this sister and she'll be on her way. She asked me if I wanted to hear something, and I hate to shoot down people who have a passion because so many people in this world just don't, so I said "Yes." By the end of the poem, I felt like I'd known her for years. She blew me away. I bought a book of course and if I had more money I would have bought 3 more.
She blows me away and then leaves with her book to read. And I did just that. I'm reading so intently that I didn't even see this guy come up beside me. He's amuzed at how intently I'm reading her book at a bar. He wanted to know what I was reading and I told I couldn't tell him but to let the poet do her presentation for him. This conversation gows on for about 10 mins, and we bring his girlfriend into the conversation. I'm still insisting that they hear her and I ain't telling them a thing.
The poet, Ivette, give her presentaion to the couple and the girlfriend ends up crying because she was so moved by her poem. Ivette begins to tell her story to use and we are all captivated by her strength, courage and tenacity. I left her alone with the couple to talk with them and so that I could finish THE BOOK, it's just that good.
After I finished reading her marvelous work, we had drinks and talked like old friends. We were typical bar customers, drinkin' laughin' and jolly. :) I had a wonderful day; I was blessed by two unexpected soul connections.
